During the last two days of her life, Mrs. May was still and quiet, but in an unexpected lucid moment, she - a lifelong poetry lover - opened her eyes and clearly said, 'sunset and evening star.' Rani and her husband Scott looked up the verse and discovered this beautiful poem about a soul putting out to sea.

Hallowell, our hospice singing group, was thrilled to get to sing this for Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Matthai who started the Green Belt Movement, planting millions of trees in Kenya. Harry and Edith Barron joined the Bruderhof, a German/English pacifist spiritual community, after it had fled Nazi Germany and settled in England. World War II forced the community to move to the jungles of Paraguay, where they built their own houses, grew their own food, and sang and sang. Harry and Edith ended up in Brattleboro after they left the Bruderhof, and we were doubly blessed to get to know them and to learn this song.

It has become a favorite with our Hallowell hospice singers, and it has been sung at weddings. We learned it from the singing of Michael Cooney on his CD album 'Together Again'.

Waulking Song

a cappella SATB - traditional - arr. Amidon/O'Donovan read more In Amidons' book/CD 'Beatitudes'. Fulling, milling, or waulking of home-made cloth for household use was carried out in Gaelic Scotland by pounding the material against a board. Waulking songs are rhythmic songs that were made up to accompany the work and coordinate the beating. The melody comes from Sam Henry's 'Songs of the People', with new lyrics by Susan McKeown, and some old blessings from the Carmina Gadelica, a collection of old Scots charms and runes. Mary Alice first heard this song on Carla Sciaky's wonderful CD album 'Weave and Spin'. Carla sings the song much slower than an actual waulking song tempo, and so do we. This harmonization is a transcription of the improvised harmonies from the Amidon family and Aoife O'Donovan's 2004 New Year's Eve performance in Brattleboro, VT.
