We recorded a simple guitar/banjo version of this wonderful children's song on our CD 'A Song in My Heart'. This version, with its four part harmony, would be great for an older girls' choir, or the vocal parts could be simplified for a younger group of children. Nym Cooke is one of the leading scholars of early American music, and a wonderfully enthusiastic singing leader. He wrote this song the winter after the birth of his daughter Thalia, and published his own lovely SATB harmonization in his classic collection 'Awake to Joy! Christmas Carols for Part-Singing'. I found the melody taking me in a different direction. You get both piano/vocal score and vocal score pdfs.

a cappella SSAA - by Peter Amidon read moreI originally composed an SATB version of this song for the original Stephen Stearns/Peter Amidon musical "Truth" (you can hear that version in the Sacred SATB page of this website), but it turned out that the actor who played the Acres brother, the only bass, was off stage when the family sang this grace, so I had to re-write it for soprano/alto/tenor, which is what you hear on the recording (sung by the original New England Youth Theatre cast of "Truth"). On the pdf score you will get I have raised it from D to F and slightly changed the bottom line to make it an SSAA piece for treble voices.

You can get a sense of what it will sound like in the third verse of the SATB recording where men drop out and only the sopranos and altos sing.
